A downtown casino beside the arena

Grand Villa Casino Edmonton stands at 10204 104 Avenue NW, in downtown Edmonton's ICE District beside Rogers Place. Gateway Casinos runs it. Its doors first opened on September 7, 2016, a day ahead of the neighbouring arena. At that opening it was described as a 60,000 sq ft, four-storey casino with private gaming salons.

Its roots go back to June 2002, when Gateway acquired the Baccarat Casino in Edmonton. On April 13, 2015, Gateway announced a new $32 million casino to replace it. Partners were the Katz Group and Oilers Entertainment Group, at the corner of 102 Street and 104 Avenue. The old Baccarat was demolished in 2020, and a small dog park and the ICE District Fan Park event space replaced it. In this guide the venue sits in the Edmonton area section, among the 30 venues listed on this site.

On the floor and around it

  • Gaming floor: at the 2016 opening the building was described as four storeys with private gaming salons. A salon is a separate, more private room for play.
  • Steak and seafood: a sit-down steakhouse on the pedway level. The pedway is the indoor walkway network linking downtown Edmonton buildings.
  • Match Eatery & Public House: British-style pub, likewise on the pedway level; DJs, live music and televised sports.
  • Neighbours: Rogers Place stands beside the casino, and the ICE District Fan Park event space now occupies the former Baccarat site.
  • Loyalty card: Winner's Edge is AGLC's province-wide casino loyalty program, used at Alberta casinos. Points are earned on carded play, meaning play recorded on your card.
  • Charity link: Alberta is the only province in Canada where charitable organizations are licensed to conduct and manage casino events. In 2024-25 charitable gaming raised $422.8 million, with 67.6% coming from casino events.

Asked about this page

Questions

Who runs Grand Villa Casino Edmonton?

Gateway Casinos runs it. Gateway acquired Edmonton's Baccarat Casino in June 2002 and announced its replacement on April 13, 2015. The new casino opened on September 7, 2016.

Why was the casino closed for so long?

It stayed closed from March 2020 to July 2022, longer than provincial COVID orders required. As a penalty, AGLC removed 57 slot machines and set operating conditions for their return. A three-person hearing panel later sided with Grand Villa, finding it should decide when to operate, within reason.

Can you eat at Grand Villa Casino Edmonton?

Two sit-down restaurants share the pedway level. One is a steakhouse. The other, Match Eatery & Public House, is a pub in the British style, with DJs, live music and sports showing on TV.
